Students from Africa, Asia, the Near and Middle East, Oceania, the Caribbean, and Latin America can apply propably spring 2024 for the One World Scholarship. The prerequisite is their interest in and commitment to the field of sustainable development and the corresponding focus in their studies.
The application deadline for the 2024/25 academic year has expired. The next call for applications will take place in June 2025.
Selection Process
Applying for a One World Scholarship, submitting the application form and the necessary documents do NOT GUARANTEE a successful scholarship position. As scholarship positions are very limited, applicants go through a multi-stage selection process:
1. Submission of the online form
Please fill out the form (link below) completely and submit it.
As correspondence in the further selection process will be sent via the email address from the application form, it is important that the email address is filled in CORRECTLY.
Please also check the spam folder regularly and contact us if you do not hear anything for more than one week.
2. Verification of formal criteria
After receiving the application, the formal requirements will be checked:
- Formal criteria are NOT fulfilled: the applicant receives a REJECTION by e-mail.
- Formal criteria are fulfilled: The applicant will be requested to send the documents (see the checklist below) via transfer link by e-mail in a short period of time.
It is advisable to prepare the documents in advance for digital transfer!
3. Examination of the criteria regarding sustainable development
After receipt of the application documents, a thorough assessment of the content criteria will be conducted to see if there is an interest in and commitment to the field of sustainable development and whether the focus of the degree programme is in a relevant field:
- Criteria regarding sustainable development are NOT fulfilled: The applicant receives the REJECTION by e-mail.
- Criteria regarding sustainable development are fulfilled: The applicant receives an invitation to the online interview by e-mail.
4. Online interview
The study advisor arranges an appointment with the applicant for the online interview.
The participation link is sent by e-mail after the appointment has been fixed.
5. Acceptance/ Rejection
Shortly after the application deadline of 15 July, the Grants Committee will meet and decide whether to award or reject the scholarship place.
Notification of Approvel or Rejection will be sent by email in the first half of August.
IMPORTANT
You can only apply if you are already enrolled in Austria or if you are at least admitted to a regular degree programme. In addition, a residence permit or student visa "student" is required. If you have not yet entered Austria, a student visa is also accepted in exceptional cases.

Please write a text, max. 3500 characters, format freely chosen. Address the following points:
- Describe briefly your personal background (interests, social and financial situation)
- Give examples and experiences that illustrate your engagement in the field of sustainable development
- Explain the relevance of your study focus to the field of sustainable development
- List your skills and qualifications that you can contribute to the activities and focus areas of the Afro-Asian Institute
- Reflect on your personal possibilities for shaping and contributing to a sustainable future in a globalized world
Master students
- Bachelor's degree certificate + translation (if not in English, French or Spanish)
- Abstract of the Bachelor's thesis
Doctoral students
- Master's degree certificate + translation (if not in English, French or Spanish)
- Abstract of the Master's thesis
- Confirmation of supervision from the academic supervisor
- Detailed description of the research project and justification of its relevance to development policy
